Step 6 - drawing the chain |
|
|
Before drawing, the chain is a little bit uneven and doesn't yet move as one continuous piece. The
drawing process tightens the chain into a smooth, unbroken snake of metal.
My "draw plate" has several holes of gradually decreasing diameter. I start with the larger holes and
gradually work my way down, drawing the chain through and annealing it to re-soften the metal. This
process compresses the chain, giving it a sleek and dense feel. This is the final step of the chain
construction. To finish the piece, I fabricate end caps and solder them on to the chain. Then
a final polish and it's ready to wear!
